Stand Tall: A how-to on tall valve covers
As we make our Mustangs go faster we make changes to the valvetrain that at some point necessitate taller than stock valve covers to fit. Some like the "racy" look of taller valve covers but to the hard core enthusiast they serve a bigger purpose. The most common reason to use tall valve covers is to be able to fit aftermarket roller rockers and valvetrain stabilizers more commonly known as stud girdles. However, before you decide to simply bolt on a set of those polished, tall, Motorsport val...

[02/07/2002] Ford Debuts 2003 Cobra at the Chicago Auto Show

By: -

Every few years, Ford''s SVT program tries to out-do its previous creations. This time, they really went out of their way to make the 2003 Mustang Cobra the best model yet by adding over 120 horsepower from their base GT model. This great achievement is made possible by the addition of a Roots-type supercharger and a water-to-air intercooler to the Cobra''s 4.6 liter, iron block, DOHC 4-valve V-8.

SVT didn''t just improve the Cobra''s powertrain, for the first time, they also improved the drivetrain from the previous Cobra models. By adding a 6-speed gearbox as standard equipment, the Cobra''s drivetrain is capable of handling the serious amount of horsepower that the blown 4.6 puts out. Cobra enthusiasts will be very pleased with the change in gear ratio, from 3.27:1 to 3.55:1, which makes for quicker acceleration.

The independent rear suspension received upgraded bushings and an additional cross brace to help plant the 390 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque the engine produces. Gas pressurized shocks and stiffer springs were added to give the Cobra even better handling. New for 2003 are a new set of springs, specifically made for the convertible model because of its unique characteristics of the convertible body.

The Cobra''s engine and suspension were not all that was upgraded; the Cobra also received a face lift. While the Cobra kept its signature round fog lamps, the front facia was given a more aggressive look and also helps deliver more air to the engine compartment. SVT even added REAL, functional, hood scoops to help vent the hot air way from the engine compartment. The side mirrors were painted for a nice subtle addition as well as the placement of side scoops before the rear wheels. The rear spoiler was also redesigned with an LED center mounted brake lamp.
