[05/07/2002] Columbus NMRA Shootout Coverage Eliminations Report

By: -

The Mustangworks team has just finished up itscoverage of the race. A full feature article on all the race classes isbeing hammered out as you read this. In the meantime here is the scoop onthe final results:

In Pro 5.0 It was Billy Glidden''s nitrous machine running in the 6''sthroughout eliminations. He defeated Derrick Smith in the final roundwith a 6.881 @ 202.73 mph. In Super Street Outlaw Gary Rohe defeatedMike Smith. Rohe''s blue 80 Mustang, a familiar car to those who followNMCA racing, went 8.20 @ 169.19 mph in the finals. One of the most popularclasses in Mustang racing is EFI Renegade and Columbus had lots of them!Tim Lyons'' 88 Mustang took the win over Mike Post with a 9.187 @ 148.53 mph.In Drag Radial the top two cars met up in the finals. Chris Little''s brightgreen 90 coupe emerged the victor. Little bested Spence Hart by running8.968 @ 156.81 mph. Did we mention that was on a drag radial? Yikes!

While blowers, turbos, and nitrous are all the rage, there are stillthose who make their power the old fashioned way. They play in Hot Streeton race day and on this day Brian Booze''s 92 Mustang took the win. Boozewent 9.447 @ 148.53 MPH to take out Ed Kowalczyk. In Real Street it was the88 coupe of Mark Magnuson that would take out Gabe Large with a10.773 @ 128.21 mph. In Factory Stock Tim Duncan''s red light sent TroyCarter''s 88 Mustang down the track with a win. Meanwhile in Modular Muscle,Jim Breese went home a winner turning a 12.621 on a 12.59 dial in. He beatout Brandon Rivard in the finals. In Open Comp Lee Howie ran a 9.682 on a9.6 dial in to take the win. You may recall Howie from previous FFW TrueStreet events where he had his turbo''d black Mustang in the 8''s! In theTruck class Ford''s newest generation Lightning is proving to be quitepopular. But in the end it was Peter Rogowski''s 92 Ranger that would turnaway the last Lightning. Rogowski ran a 12.117 on a 12.08 dial in todefeat Aaron Kincaid''s Lightning.

The NMRA race also had other attractions besides the race classes. TheHooters sponsored jet powered Mustang Funny Car made several blastsdown the track. In the meantime over the other side of the track, theManufacturer''s Midway continued with large displays of lots of go fastgoodies. A car show featured many meticulously detailed street machineswith lots of chrome and fancy paint jobs if that''s your preference. Nowthat the NMRA Columbus event has been held for the past three years, apattern is emerging. This is the place to be each spring if you are aMustang fanatic!
