Stand Tall: A how-to on tall valve covers
As we make our Mustangs go faster we make changes to the valvetrain that at some point necessitate taller than stock valve covers to fit. Some like the "racy" look of taller valve covers but to the hard core enthusiast they serve a bigger purpose. The most common reason to use tall valve covers is to be able to fit aftermarket roller rockers and valvetrain stabilizers more commonly known as stud girdles. However, before you decide to simply bolt on a set of those polished, tall, Motorsport val...

[10/17/2002] Steeda Q400's to grudge race during Moroso's Ford Power Festival

By: -

Mark your calendars for October 19-20, 2002 as Moroso Motorsports Park once again invites Ford Fans to revile in their glory during the WIRK 107.9 Ford Power Festival. The event is a yearly gathering for Fords on and off the drag strip. The 1/4 -mile racing includes two heads-up classes and three bracket classes, along with the awesome Quick 16 race on Saturday night. The event also brings the Miss Hawaiian Tropic Model Search to the South Florida track for the first time. In the paddock there will be every model and year of Ford Cars, Trucks and SUV''s ready for the judging from the Editor''s of 5.0 MUSTANG & Super Fords, MUSTANGS & FORD, and MUSTANG MONTHLY, as well as the national coverage the event will receive on the television show "RACER''S EDGE - Motorsports Unscripted".

Steeda Autosports has become a staple of Moroso''s Ford Power Festival, and this year is no different. Steeda has planned their annual "Steeda Stampede" which involves a tour and BBQ at the Pompano Beach location, and a follow-the-leader stampede from there to Moroso for the event. This takes place on Saturday, October 19th at noon. Once at Moroso Steeda will have a grudge race between two of their Q400 Mustangs, one wearing Nitto Drag Radial tires and the other 18" Street tires. This breed of Mustang is available at any Ford Dealership and Steeda wants to show what it can do off the showroom floor.

The racing class to watch will be the Street Outlaw class as Hollywood''s Martin DeWinter, the 2001 champion, returns to take on big hitters like Jason Gatlin of Sunrise who gave DeWinter a tough run to the finish line in 2001. Gatlin claimed the low E.T. of the event with a 7.940 second run, but DeWinter had the top speed of 177.93 mph. In the final round it all came down to the light - Gatlin fouled out and gave the title to DeWinter. So, 2002 is a year for redemption for Gatlin and the year for validation for the 2001 Champion.

These two racers will have a battle on their hands as other hard-core Ford racers, such as Jim Blair, will be stomping on the 1/4 mile. Blair, aka Boss Hoss, of Ft. Lauderdale has his sights set on having his ''95 351ci Mustang corralled in the winner''s circle. Since the 2001 Ford event Blair has driven his pony to the tune of 7.80 seconds at 180 mph - therefore the title may be up for grabs.

Moroso''s other race classes will make for exciting racing as Drag Strip Manager, Jay Fairchild, has added a bracket race for Trucks/SUV/Tow Trucks. This will make for interesting E.T.''s. Then, there will be the ever-popular Saturday night Quick 16, which pits the fastest 16 vehicles in the field against each other to see who gets the bragging rights. Moroso will also feature Ford ONLY bracket races for Super Pro, Pro and Jr. Dragsters.

Exhibition cars include the Jet Funny car "Hooters", driven by Freddy Sibley of Sarasota, FL, who returns to the Palm Beach Gardens racetrack to take on Fran Peppler who drives "Rock N'' Roll Thunder". The GE J-85 Jet Engine that powers "Hooter''s" is normally found in an F-5 Fighter and can put out anywhere from 4,800 to 5,000 horsepower. Sibley has piloted this Ford bodied craft down the 1/4 mile at 280 mph and hopes to give Moroso''s 2002 Ford Fanatics a fire show to remember, as he takes on the Chevy bodied, female piloted "Rock N'' Roll Thunder". Peppler''s ride also sports a GE J-85 jet engine with 6,000 pounds of thrust and 5,000 horsepower. This lady can fly, and Sibley has his work cut out for him on Moroso''s 1/4 mile.

The Jet Dragsters on hand will be "Chariot of Fire" and "US 1" who will go head-to-head trying the reach the 310 mph mark. The wheelstander "SuperWinch" will also be trying to break the standing Moroso two-wheeled mph record that "SuperWinch" driver Danny O''Day set in 2000.

Saturday, October 19th, the gates will open at 2:30p.m. with Time Trials beginning at 3p.m. Car Show registration will be open from 2:30p.m. until 4:30p.m. and the awards will be given out at 5:30p.m. Qualifying for the Heads-up Ford classes and the Quick 16 will be at 4:30p.m. and 8p.m. with the Quick 16 Eliminations beginning at 8:30p.m. The Jet Funny Cars, Jet Dragsters and the wheelstander will be on track at 6:30 and 9:00p.m. The Miss Hawaiian Tropic showcase will be on stage beginning at 7p.m. at the same time the Jr. Dragster Eliminations will take place on the drag strip.
